Food is a need for every human being. Apart from filling the stomach, the food we consume is also an effort that we make for our bodies to fulfill our body needs.

In addition, food also has an important role in supporting daily activities and maintaining health. Therefore, it is important for every parent to set healthy eating habits in children from an early age.

There are four things that can be a strategy for parents to teach children about healthy eating habits.

Healthy Food: Habits not Rules in Family

You and your family must ensure that eating nutritious foods has become a habit in your family. Consume healthy foods as a routine every day. You can involve the whole family in choosing some nutritious and delicious options.

You can list the names of nutritious and healthy foods. Then, you can take the kids to the grocery store. Younger children can be given the option to choose fresh fruits and vegetables. Older children can get the list of foods you have made and let them choose some from the list.

Demonstrating the Right and Proper Way of Eating Healthy

You must give children an example of how to eat food properly, half of a plate filled with fruit and vegetables that have nutrients. Explain to children that this measure will help their bodies grow.

The other half of the plate can be filled with whole grains and lean protein which gives them energy for study, do activity and play. Learn each function of the types of food in the human body so that you can explain to children it. When you are cooking or shopping with children, you can directly show them different examples of this food group.

Teaching Children to Read Food Label in Buying Food or Beverage

Teach your children how to read food labels so they have the skills to make healthy choices at the grocery store and at home. Before you teach this to children, first make sure you understand the various types of food that are healthy and that need to be minimized in quantity to eat them.

Avoid Prohibiting Children from Eating Certain Foods

There are times when you as a parent feel that you need to forbid your child from eating food, such as chips. Be a parent who educates, not prohibits. When you have adopted healthy eating habits and explained the necessary food content in the body, your child will have absorbed the information.

However, there will be moments when your child will crave food that we know is “less healthy”. At such times, you may still give them the food they allow if it is not frequent and not excessive.

The prohibition only makes children want to eat these foods more. So, you need to avoid labeling food “good” or “bad”. Providing an explanation of the food label will be more useful. Plus, eating the foods your child really wants will not be a problem as long as it is not often.
