As a society, we are at a diverse, discriminatory, and social level. We see many social levels in our nation, starting from families and people who are very successful, then intermediate, and people who have difficulties in their daily lives. This difference is a form of social difference.

Parents might rarely discuss or provide an understanding about this topic to children, especially young children. In the end, children will learn about this from seeing their environment through their own observations.

In fact, teaching children about social differences is important. When we teach and provide understanding to our children about this topic, we can teach them about social justice. You can introduce your children to this topic through age-appropriate literature, news, anti-bias lessons, or even by direct observation.

There are four ways that parents do to bring discussion about diversity and social differences to children.

  1. Use children’s literature

There are countless children’s books that can be read about the topics of bias, diversity, and social differences. Provide books that explain the diversity of each person or books that express biases or share stories about people who opposed injustice when they discovered social differences.

Not all books are perfect. Maybe when you read it, you find that there are opinions from the book you chose that you do not want to teach your child. Therefore, first, read the book before you discuss it with your child so you can sort out the important points to teach your children.

  1. Use the news

Find the topics and news related to this topic. You can show stories where there are lots of relevant stories about bias and especially where someone is against it and justice prevails. Make sure the news you provide is still following your child’s age, not too brutal, but the topic can still be conveyed for them.

  1. Teach anti-bias lessons

The social and emotional development of children is an important part of their lives because there are lots of bullying about identity is consciously or unconsciously going on in their environment.

Therefore, you need to help your children to teach bias. You can teach about identities, differences, biases, and how bias and bullying need to be solved individually, in groups, and large communities.

  1. Explore solutions

Teach concepts of helping others. You can teach these so children understand that social injustice is real but people who are aware of it can help overcome it starting from small things.

For example, providing food for the homeless. We teach them to care for everyone while at the same time deepening the conversation to convey a broader social justice perspective with children. Create clear and interesting discussions for children so that they know the importance of social justice during differences.

You can also teach children to think about the solutions to reduce and solve this social difference problem. It can be a very long and difficult topic. But with parental help, children can understand it and become a person who brings the right perspectives for themselves and people around them.

We need to start teaching this topic with the young hearts and minds of our children so it will have a lasting impact on their future.
