Technology has become a big part of our lives today. Technology is developing so fast that it is one of our needs. Teaching your child about the basics of using technology such as smartphones, computers or laptops can be a challenge.

There are values that you need to teach when children learn about technology. They learn techniques to find out how to use it according to today’s increasingly sophisticated needs, for example for school or several other important activities such as finding information, online tutoring, honing skills, etc.

So, when should you introduce your child to technology? And what are some of the basic computer skills that are important for kids?

In fact, for the first question, each family will have a different answer. This can be based on lifestyle and its relationship to technology.

Some children may be familiar with technology because they often see their parents using it and technology around the house. There are children who will not interact with technology until a certain age is in accordance with their parents’ desire.

You are the one who can decide, the right time for you to introduce children to technology. However, there are some guidelines that you should introduce when using technology to children, namely when:

  • They are mature enough to at least understand what technology is. Therefore, the writer himself as a teacher suggests that the minimum age for introducing technology is 3 years old so that at least they understand a little about technology.
  • They are also old enough to start using technology in school.
  • Parents are there to guide and supervise them in using technology, especially at their early age.

Whatever age you and your partner determine as the right time to introduce technology, do this with your supervision. There are some basic things you need to do in introducing children to technology.

  • Start with a computer or laptop

The best way to introduce your child to technology is to introduce children through a laptop or computer, not using a cellphone, tablet, or another device. Why? It helps you limit children’s access and allows you to teach them only the basics, such as how to turn on and turn off the computer, and how to open and close applications or data on it.

You could also consider showing your child a video or website about the history of computers for kids so that they have a better understanding of what computers are and how they have developed over the years.

At this stage, you can also teach children how to take care of the computer, such as washing and thoroughly drying their hands before using the computer and keeping food and drink away from the computer. This will give your child a solid foundation when it comes to learning computers, how to use them, and completing tasks with this device.

  • Learn to type

Typing skills will be important when the child studies in school and for their future work. Children learn skills faster than adults, so the faster children learn to type, the better. You can teach the correct typing technique from the beginning, so your child does not have to use the hunt-and-peck method.

You can teach children how to type on their own, or they can learn to type using a special program like Typing Club, through games like Jungle Junior, or other software programs like Typing Instructor for Kids 5.0.

  • Exploring the Internet

Your children will really need the internet for their learning needs both at school and for their future. Teaching children from an early age that the internet is a resource tool for learning and obtaining information is a must.

Teach children how to find information using the internet by typing keywords into various search engines such as google chrome, Microsoft edge, safari, etc. Another important thing is to teach children to use legitimate and reliable sources of information. Talk about the differences between .com, .edu, .org, and .gov. How can sources on the internet become important information or just a hoax.

Technology is vast and provides a lot of positives and negatives for children of all ages. So, how do you keep your kids safe online?

  • The first step to basic internet security is to look at your internet service provider’s parental controls. This will help you block the most inappropriate websites and language.
  • You also need to play an active role in keeping your children safe by teaching them to have responsible online behavior and by monitoring their online activities.
  • If they are old enough, teach and explain about spam or anything designed to capture personal information. They need to learn how to avoid it as they begin to use technology more frequently and not fill in their personal information carelessly.

Internet safety teaching is made more complicated with teens, who often have their own devices and want more privacy. With these children, hopefully, you have laid a solid foundation for safety, but keep an eye out for signs of trouble.

If your teen spends the night online, receives messages from strangers, or unsolicited gifts, it may be time to check their messages, their search history, and limit their online access. It sounds strict for them, but this is the best way before your child goes on the wrong path. Make sure that when you apply this you also explain it carefully and lovingly so that your child will try to accept it.
