Children today spend most of their time at home during the pandemic. What is your child’s favorite place at home? Is it a refrigerator? Taking sugary foods or drinks?

Nowadays, more and more choices of drinks are sold freely. Many choices seem healthy to drink, but sometimes the appearance of the drink can deceive us, especially our child’s body.

If we as parents are not careful, there are lots of drinks that contain ingredients that we do not expect, for example, a large amount of sugar contained.

Currently, the author often sees the tendency of children to spend their money on consuming sweet things, including drinks because they are delicious. We took some research by asking some of them about their habit of consuming sugar at home. Most of them answered that they were allowed by their parents to consume if no more than one.

It sounds a little, but have you seen the ingredients contained in that one drink if it is consumed every day? Let us look at four harmful effects of consuming sugary drinks on children’s growth.

1. Cavities and Damaged Teeth

The first danger when children consume excessive sugar is cavities and a higher risk for getting more damage. Consuming excessive sugary drinks will cause tooth decay.

Even if children practice good oral hygiene such as brushing their teeth at least twice, this action will be useless if you still let your child consume sugary drinks most of the time.

2. Obesity

Children who often consume excess sugar have a higher risk of obesity. Several studies have found that children who consume excess sugar are obese or overweight. The impact of obesity can cause heart disease, liver disease, diabetes, bone problems, and much more problems that can come expectedly.

3. Weak Brain

Children who consume excess sugar have the risk of weakening their brain function. Excess sugar consumption in children tends to make it difficult for them to catch lessons quickly.

More than that, another effect that follows is a significant emotional change to the children. They will be easily feeling irritable, emotional, and depressed. The reason is that the feelings of children with excessive sugar consumption are very difficult to control to make it calmer.

4. Easily Feeling Hunger

Children who consume excess sugar drinks tend to feel hungry easily. This is due to the presence of excess glucose stored in the body which blocks the leptin hormone to signal the body when it is full. It will surely disrupt the children’s growth.

Parents cannot continually monitor the children’s drinking choices that they consume 7 x 24 hours. Still, you can teach and train your child’s appetite in choosing drinks that are natural and not too sweet.

With regular exercise, children will get used to healthy drinks and choose to drink them. Teaching your child to make these choices will reduce their excess sugar intake and encourage them to adopt healthy habits for good growth.

Let us practice a healthy lifestyle for the best children’s growth, dear parents!
